Rae: Key home double
By Roger Graham
Critical spell: Next two home games are vital, says chairman.
MORTON chairman Douglas Rae has said the next two home games are critical in his club’s fortunes.
Commenting on the current situation, in which Morton are bottom on the First Division, he said: “I have had belief he [manager Davie Irons] will turn things round.
“Obviously, results have been pulling me the other way.
“But we have two home games coming up. I think they are critical.
“We have got to start the fightback then. I am not saying we have to be off the bottom of the table after these games, but the fightback has to have started.”
The chairman continued: “I can’t believe where the team is. We were believed to be infinitely stronger than last season. It hasn’t been that in reality, apart from cup games.
“It is a really vital situation.”
Mr Rae went on to confirm that the playing staff’s wage bill was Ł180,000 in excess of last season and said: “People have a right to expect it [the team’s position] to be better.”
The chairman continued: “But I have always been optimistic. I believe they [players and management] will pull it together, but I would not be telling the truth if I did not say I was very concerned.
“I certainly did not expect us to be anywhere near where we are.
“We do not want to lose our First Division status.”
