MORTON boss David Irons is hoping that Sunday’s Alba Challenge Cup semi-final against Ross County in Dingwall can be the turning point in his team’s season.
Beaten 3-0 at the same venue last Saturday, and propping up the First Division table, it is a key match for the Cappielow men.
Said Irons: “We’re not looking much beyond Sunday, to be honest, but it’s obviously important. It’s a case of getting confidence in the team and in each other.
“It’s errors that have been costing us. As I’ve said, it’s inches that are making the difference. It’s not as if there is the width of the Grand Canyon between us and any other team.
“If each individual can improve their concentration by five per cent then that can make the difference.”
The team have an extra day to prepare and Irons said: “We have been coaching and coaching, giving the players pictures in their minds, and it gives us an extra day to put things in place.”
Meeting the same opponents twice in the space of a week may not be ideal, and Irons said: “It’s like the Queen of the South scenario recently. We know it will be a difficult game. They’ll be a bit more confident after beating us, but we’ll be even more determined than ever.
“It’s a major cup final as far as we’re concerned and we’ll be treating it very seriously.”
Meanwhile, defender David MacGregor is back in full training and he will be travelling north with the Ton squad.
