No drinks for Ton boss after win
SAFE HANDS; Keeper Kevin Cuthbert was Morton's star man in Dumfries.
DAVIE Irons has every reason to toast a stunning away performance — just not at his local.
The Morton boss, who lives in Dumfries, could hardly hide his delight at overcoming high-flying Queen of the South.
And while his joy is not going to be shared by his neighbours, Irons is happy to deal with the banter of a rivalry which is almost always friendly.
In the aftermath of his side’s biggest win of the campaign, the Ton gaffer said: “You do get the occasional person shouting at you in the street, but it’s nearly all very good natured.
“Despite that I don’t think I’ll be having a drink in Dumfries tonight.”
Irons has good reason to be happy as his game plan at Palmerston Park worked perfectly.
Morton managed to contain Queen of the South, while picking the holes in their defence which earned them a deserved victory.
Former Queen of the South fans’ favourite Peter Weatherson put his old club to the sword with two killer strikes inside the first half hour.
His efforts were followed up by a great strike by Allan Jenkins in 37 minutes.
Despite a full-scale attack on the Morton goal during the second half, Morton held firm to secure their first away win of the season.
Irons said: “I’m pleased for Peter Weatherson to come back down here and score twice.
“Jenkins’ goal was a cracker, but I thought that they were all good finishes and I’m very pleased for all the players.
“This is a big win for us today, a great result. I’m delighted for all the players.
“We have now won three out of our last four games and that has given the players some belief again.”
The boss was particularly happy to beat a team which has given the credibility of the First Division a real boost with Scottish Cup final performances and their European experience.
He said: “We want to aspire to be at the level that Queens have got to over the past year or so. They are a very good team.
“It would be fair to say we use Queen of the South as a benchmark for where Morton can go.”
Irons admitted his side had some understandably nervous moments in the second half. He said: “The second half was a little bit tough for us at times, but we got the fourth goal just at the right time. It’s a huge three points for us.”
Angry Doonhamers boss Gordon Chisholm admitted: “It was a terrible performance by us.
“We lost four sloppy goals and didn’t start playing until the second half.
“But credit to Morton — they’ve come here and raised their game.”
