DAVIE Irons has ruled out any imminent Morton move for Kenny Deuchar - but hopes his close ties with the ex-Gretna goal machine might pay dividends one day.
The man dubbed "Dr Goals" played for Ton in a closed doors game against Rangers yesterday - but the Cappielow boss is keen to stress that qualified medic Deuchar is still attached to Major League Soccer in the USA.
Irons told the Tele that the towering hitman - who made 29 appearances for Real Salt Lake in his MLS debut season - had donned a Ton strip to help keep himself fit during his "off-season", and is set to return to the States shortly.
Irons said: 'It was a bit of a favour on our part to Kenny, and for him back to us. He is still an MLS player at this moment and unless that changes in future that"s as far as it goes. It was a workout for Kenny.
'He is due back out in the States at the beginning of February and this was really just an opportunity for him to get a game and help us out too at the same time. He enjoyed it.'
Irons added: 'We have a good relationship with Kenny, having worked with him at Gretna, and maybe it could benefit us further down the line. You never know.'
The Ton gaffer also revealed that he is currently running the rule over some trialists as he looks at his options ahead of the second half of the season.
He said: 'A couple of trialists played at Murray Park and caught the eye. We will keep monitoring the situation with them but there is no movement to report as yet.'
Of the closed doors clash with Rangers, Irons said he was pleased with the way his players had acquitted themselves.
Ton went down 1-0 as they took on a Gers side sprinkled with first team talent and fringe men - with the likes of Steven Whittaker, Kyle Lafferty, Chris Burke, Charlie Adam and DaMarcus Beasley all featuring for the Ibrox giants.
Irons said: 'It was a decent game and we lost 1-0 to a strong Rangers side. But the result is not the important thing in these games. It"s about the workout, their attitude and performance, and all of them were fine.'
Most of Irons" squad got a run-out to keep them ticking over during the break from competitive action enforced by Ton"s early exit from the Scottish Cup - and he believes the chance to test themselves against top flight opposition was well worthwhile.
He said: 'The few of them with knocks like James Grady, Allan Jenkins and David MacGregor didn"t play but the rest of them have come through it fine against what was a good Rangers side.'
