Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Africa Day event at Inverkip Primary School and the launch of the Moneysense for Schools scheme at St Kenneth’s Primary School.

Both events showed there is a willingness by the pupils and teachers to engage in wider issues which will help the pupils in future years.

The pupils who took part and organised the Africa Day event were a credit to the school and their parents.

I am also sure the pupils who now run the St Kenneth’s Royal Bank will be budding bank managers of the future and this experience can only benefit them. Well done to the pupils and the teachers at both schools for making these two excellent events happen.

1 April is usually a fools day, but this year things were a bit different. Four important policies were introduced which will have a positive impact in Inverclyde. Firstly, council taxpayers in Inverclyde will have a council tax freeze for the first time in many years. Secondly, the Government has introduced the first reduction in prescription charges, with their eventual abolition in 2011. A prescription will now cost £5, down from £6.85.

Thirdly, businesses will see the first stage of the Small Business Bonus Scheme which will see small businesses having their rates cut.

Fourthly, students will get a better deal with the dreaded graduate endowment officially scrapped.

I believe the introduction of these policies will create vast benefits for everyone in Inverclyde.
