Greenock doing a 'Monte Carlo'

Printer Print Article

AS many readers will be aware, trying to travel by road through the west/central area of Greenock has, for many years, meant ‘doing a Monte Carlo’ simply because a short stretch of highway (Inverkip Street) has been closed to two-way traffic for more years than I can remember.

The initial problem was the replacement of the railway bridge at Greenock West station. That has been done. So why does a short journey between Greenock Cemetery and Roxburgh Street now mean a trip out behind the site of the former McNeil Baths? Because ‘Transport Scotland’ intend to implement a Traffic Regulation Order which would allow two-way traffic on Inverkip Street to recommence, but there have been two objections to this Order and it looks like the issue will be referred to the relevant Scottish Government minister for a decision.

Meanwhile, road users in Greenock suffer.

Can I suggest anyone who has been affected by this nonsensical arrangement over the years (almost decades now, surely?) register their displeasure with their district councillors and ask what they are doing about it?
