Helping in Clyde Pilots dispute
By Stuart McMillan
RECENTLY in Parliament, I met with representatives of the Clyde Pilots, who wanted to highlight the current position with their dispute with Clydeport.
One of their issues concerned safety measures on the river.
The pilots gave a presentation and took questions from MSP’s and members of the press.
I felt it important to organise this event as the pilots do a vital job on the Clyde and the current lack of dialogue between both parties needs to be addressed as quickly as possible.
I spoke in Parliament on the Moving Scotland Forward debate last week to highlight the important issue of pleural plaques, which I have campaigned on since being elected.
The Scottish Government will be bringing a bill forward in the near future to enable pleural plaques sufferers to claim for justice.
This will in effect overturn the House of Lords ruling last October.
It will also show the Scottish Government is prepared to do the right thing for the people of Scotland.
This week I met with Gordon Meldrum, the director general of the Scottish Crime and Drugs Enforcement Agency (SCDEA).
This was an extremely worthwhile and interesting meeting, especially as it followed the recent Government statement on Drugs Strategy.
I welcomed the Government statement, which sets out to recognise that tackling the problem of drug misuse will only be done through effective policies on the economy, tackling poverty, and supporting families and children.
The strategy will also see an extra £94 million being invested to tackling the problem.
