Take trip back in time
By The Viator
THIS year’s Show Scotland weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday, with special events in museums across the country.
Local Gaelic waulking song group Sgioba Luaidh will be performing at Auchindrain farming museum near Inveraray.
Auchindrain is unique in that it is an actual old farming township whose buildings have been restored and furnished as they would have been in Victorian times.
Sgioba Luaidh had a day there last year, and were thrilled to have the experience of waulking the tweed in such atmospheric surroundings.
Waulking consists of thumping the wet newly-woven tweed to shrink and soften it.
The songs help to keep the rhythm of the work, and turn hard labour into good fun.
The group usually work with dry cloth, but are excited at the prospect of doing their first ‘real’ waulking on Saturday, when they plan to try to shrink their new tweed — a gift from Redshank Kiltmakers in Inveraray.
They will also be performing on the Sunday, if they have any puff left.
There will also be a storyteller, with tales and legends of Argyll.
Auchindrain is six miles from Inveraray on the A83 Campbeltown road.
Why not enjoy a day out and support your local waulkers?
