Flashback to 1974 : The now-demolished Hillend school in East Crawford Street, Greenock, with its replacement, King’s Oak.

LIFE is full of coincidences.

I recently published an old Hillend Primary picture sent from New Zealand by Roy Hegarty, who lived at 10 Morton Terrace, Greenock, when he attended the school.

Expats get a lot of pleasure looking at school pics from the past, especially if they, like Roy, now stay far from home.

Roy’s photo, which also appeared on our website, was of particular interest for expat Jean McIntosh, nee Gillies, because she once lived in the same close as Roy.

Jean said: “At first I thought it was my school photo, as I recognised a lot of the kids from my days at Hillend school, including Roy, but after reading that they should all be around 72 or 73, I realised that it couldn’t be, as I have just turned 71.

“Nevertheless, Roy and others may remember me as I too lived in 10 Morton Terrace until 1952 when I moved with my family to Melbourne, Australia.

“If anyone would like to contact me, I’d love to hear from them. My email address is grenglas@bigpond.net.au”

I would imagine Jean’s email address was deliberately chosen to reflect she comes from Greenock and her husband is from Glasgow.

She has an aunt who sends her the Telegraph calendar every year, and Jean says her Australian friends remark on the area’s beauty.
