MORE sport could be on the way for an 'under-used' Greenock community centre.

A number of people have offered to start up sporting clubs in the Fancy Farm/Grieve Road area following a football initiative that got off the ground there a few months ago.

Up to 25 boys and girls from the ages of seven to 14 gather each Friday to play football from 6 to 10pm under the guidance of volunteer coaches Terry Stinson and John Gallagher.

New equipment and apparatus was bought with help from Fancy Farm/Grieve Road Tenants and Residents Association.

Local Councillor Iain McKenzie said today: `The football scheme was set up to get kids off the street and give them something useful and enjoyable to do, and it's really going strong.` Now Councillor McKenzie and the association have been contacted by volunteers who want to set up Tae Kwon Do, ladies keep-fit/aerobics and boxing sessions.

Councillor McKenzie added: `I'm delighted to see on the back of the football success that other sports may be offered to the young and not so young in this community.

`This is a tremendous initiative by all involved with the Fancy Farm and Grieve Road tenants and residents. Many young people and their parents are reluctant to travel every night into the town centre for leisure facilities, so why can't they have them on their door step and, if possible, free?` He added: `We all look forward to announcing further success in our 'off the street and into sport' initiative.'`
