MEMORIES of youngsters enjoying carefree summer days will be rekindled by today"s picture from the past.

It belongs to reader Tom Ross, 64, who tells me it was taken at the top end of Greenock"s Kenilworth Crescent in 1951.

The adult in the picture was an Italian who sold ice cream from a tricyle which incorporated an ice box. He was known as "Stop me and buy one".

The gentleman carried a trumpet which a young Tom can be seen holding.

Tom said: 'I cannot remember if he played a tune or just a couple of notes to announce his arrival in an area. I never knew his name. Perhaps older readers with an Italian background may recognise him.' Tom lived in Marmion Road and all the youngsters stayed in the Peat Road area.

He can identify some of the other children.

On Tom"s left is Margaret Brown and her young brother, while on his right are Jim Houston and his young sister, Margaret.

The bigger boy on the right is Jim Currie. Please give me a call or drop me a note if you can put names to the faces of the ice cream seller and the other youngsters.

Incidentally, the houses behind the group were prefabs much loved by many of their occupants. It is just possible to see the Merino Mill in the background.
