A MUM with a flair for fashion has set up a school to help her daughter and her teenage friends create their own look.

Fed up Marilyn Thompson could not find anywhere for 13-year-old Holly to go to learn the art of fashion and design.

So, fuelled by frustration, Marilyn, who studied fashion at the now famed Cardonald College course, decided to set up her own class to indulge their shared passion.

Now, a year later, the girls have learned how to design their clothes, put together their own collections and have taken to the catwalk to model them. Marilyn, 43, from Kilmacolm, said: "There was nowhere I could send Holly so that she could learn how to design and make her own clothes. She is so creative and it was something she really wanted to do. I used to host fashion birthday parties for her and her friends that they loved.

"We had always did creative things together. So I thought, 'wait a minute' this is what I do." Marilyn studied fashion and design at college then went on to work in fashion retail for a number of years before running her own business.

Now she is returning to share her first love with her daughter.

Marilyn recently guided her girls through their first ever fashion show which was professionally put together and won rave reviews from the audience.

She added: "They all had a great time and their work was fanastic." Perfectionist Marilyn put challenges in place for the girls to create their own collections and to design their own brand.

And they even had to create a design for their very own buyer as well as creating portfolios.

On the night they showcased their own collections as well as putting their own look together for a party night.

They also designed clothes based on inspiration from a historical figure.

Holly, a pupil at St Columba's in Kilmacolm, is delighted to follow in her mum's footsteps.

She now helps out at the classes in the new community centre, in the hope of encouraging others to put their own look together from start to finish.

Holly said: "It is fantastic and I love making my own clothes.

"I have had a great time. The fashion show is amazing."
