BUOYANT Port Glasgow Victoria fighter Grant Quigley scooped the gold medal in his Serbian adventure at the weekend under scorching conditions - overcoming some of Europe's top boxers.

Grant won all three of his fights at the tournament. Other countries in attendance were Germany, Bulgaria, Russia, Hungary, Greece, Holland, Romania, Macedonia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and Scotland.

Grant boxed his first bout against Bulgaria's Maksim Cvetkov. Quigley took the fight to the Bulgarian from the opening round and quickly overpowered him- showing good strength and boxing skills with great head and body shots.

Grant's next fight the following day was against Hungarian champion Bence Nagy.

Once again, Grant showed great effort and will to win against a very strong opponent - and ran out a comfortable winner, even though there was a problem with computer scoring.

On Sunday afternoon in almost 100 degrees heat, Grant boxed in the final against Polinkis Kalamaras of Greece.

Grant won every round with some power punching. The Greek did well to stay on his feet and not get stopped, but this was a one way fight. Grant won 11/1 and took the gold medal.

The young boxer is now looking forward to the club's charity open day event with some of the proceeds going to Erskine Hospital.

He will also be doing a sponsored spar in the gym, where he can only defend but not punch back.

It will be a fun day with raffles and some young boxers showing how they train.

The event will be in early August with the date to be confirmed.
