A LORRY overturned on the A8 in Port Glasgow yesterday, causing travel disruption.

The delivery vehicle toppled as it negotiated the roundabout near to Brown Street at around 3pm.

It's understood that no other vehicle was involved in the incident and police said no one was injured as a result of the accident either.

The lorry was thought to be carrying plastics bound for a local factory when it tipped on to its side, sustaining damage and a smashed windscreen.

It toppled over on to a pavement, narrowly missing a lamp-post.

One onlooker at the scene, who did not want to be named, told the Tele: "It was very lucky that nobody happened to be walking along that bit of the pavement at the time the lorry fell over.

"It could also have been quite dangerous for other vehicles going through the roundabout at the time." Police were called to the scene and westbound entry to the roundabout from Brown Street had to be closed for a time after the accident, disrupting traffic.

Part of the dual carriageway was also temporarily blocked later as recovery teams worked to clear the stricken lorry from the road, with traffic moving freely along the key route afterwards.

Yesterday's accident is not the first time that a lorry has come to grief on the same stretch of the A8.

A truck tipped over at the same location five years ago, while another high-sided vehicle toppled at the other roundabout on the stretch of road, closer to the waterfront, last year.
