A GREENOCK woman is helping to keep alive the memory of an inspirational 12-year-old boy who lost his battle with cancer.

Kindhearted Nicola Ferdinand has put her heart and soul into supporting Calum's Cabin - a charity set up in the name of remarkable youngster Calum Spiers.

More than 300 people are joining together for a fundraiser she has arranged for the good cause at Greenock Town Hall, which will help give children with cancer and their families a much-needed holiday.

Mobile call centre manager Nicola said: "I had never been involved in anything like this before but I was so inspired by Calum's story.

"He was an inspiration and I wanted to do more to help.

"I have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, family and friends." Nicola first heard about Calum's Cabin through her work at the former T Mobile call centre, now EE, when the organisation was nominated as one of their charities of the year.

She volunteered to help out, but grew close to the Speirs family, and has carried on working with them ever since, helping at their charity shop every weekend. Since Calum died in 2007, 13 months after his tumour was diagnosed, his family have raised tens of thousands of pounds to build two holiday homes for other families who have children with life-threatening illnesses.

Nicola's big bash on Saturday 6 April will help towards the cost of running the homes.

On the night there will be performances from special guests as well as music from Earl Blue, plus an auction and raffle.

Nicola is looking for donations for the auction and the raffle on the night.

If anyone would like to make a donation they can email her on nicola.ferdinand@ee.co.uk to help.

Nicola would like the following for their help: Sew 4 U, Tony Buckley, Darren Mitchell Photography, Morton FC, Celtic FC, Rangers FC, Slaters Menswear, EE, Cherry Blossom Boutique, Pets At Home, Kevin Hunter Art, Inverkip Hotel, Tokyo Joes, Hamilton Racecourse, Waverley, Go Ape, Miller Hair, B Reem, Linda Fulton Beauty, Auchrannie Hotel, Drovers Inn, Hilton, Glynhill Hotel, Walkers, Shiny Things, Hasties, Pandamonium, Seamill Hydro, LG and RIM.
