INVERCLYDE’S Provost led the plaudits as local figures queued up to salute Ton’s terrific triumph at Celtic Park.

Provost Robert Moran said: “This historic victory for Greenock Morton gives us all in Inverclyde something to be proud of. The support of our local football team was definitely celebrated and I hope it continues throughout the league cup. I would like to personally congratulate the team for their overwhelming success.” Local MSP and Morton fan Stuart McMillan was one of the people who took to Twitter to reveal his delight, tweeting ‘outstanding result for the Ton’.

Fellow Holyrood man Duncan McNeil also sent his congratulations to Allan Moore and his men, adding ‘well done’.

Council leader and Celtic fan Stephen McCabe tried to shrug off his disappointment at the result as he described the victory as ‘historic’ and congratulated Morton.

Their messages were among hundreds posted on Twitter following the match.

It went into a frenzy as news of the shock scoreline filtered through and reverberated nationwide and beyond on Tuesday night.

A couple of hours after the game Morton were trending on the busy social network site.
