A BRAND new TV drama based on a novel by late Gourock author Iain Banks is to be poignantly filmed in his home town later this week.

A star-studded cast, which includes Peter Mullan and Gary Lewis will shoot scenes for Stonemouth at the town’s outdoor pool and Albert Road on Wednesday and Friday.

The BBC Scotland production is based on the novel of the same name by late writer and Morton fan Banks, pictured, who tragically lost his battle with cancer last year.

It will be shot in and around where the former Gourock High pupil grew up.

The two-part 60-minute drama will be the first TV adaptation since Banks’ death 16 months ago and is being filmed for BBC One Scotland and BBC Two.

The cast includes Trainspotting star Mullan and Billy Elliot actor Lewis.

Film crews will be in Gourock from 2pm to 8pm on Wednesday and 10am to 8pm on Friday.

Tim Maskell, location scout and unit manager for BBC Scotland, said: “We are very much looking forward to filming in Gourock.” TV bosses have gained permission from Inverclyde Council to impose a temporary parking ban at the outdoor pool and gym entrance and have asked residents and members of the public to refrain from stopping off in coned areas.

The story is based in the fictional fishing town of Stonemouth in Aberdeenshire in the north of Scotland but scenes are being filmed all over the country. Gourock was chosen for its picturesque waterfront location.

The drama is due to screen early next year.

Delving into love, loyalty and vengeance, Stonemouth focuses on the character of Stewart Gilmour, who returns for his best friend’s funeral.

Run out of town a year earlier by his girlfriend’s family, Stewart is forced to face up to his own past whilst uncovering the sinister truth behind his friend’s apparent suicide.

The cast also includes Christian Cooke (The Promise, Magic City) in the lead role, Joy McAvoy (Filth, Angel’s Share) sister of James McAvoy, and Naomi Battrick, who recently played pupil Gabriella Wark in Greenock-based Waterloo Road.

Christopher Aird, Stonemouth executive producer, added: “I am so pleased some of the best acting talent in the country will be appearing.

“The scripts are really strong and we are very excited to be bringing this novel to screens in 2015.”
