TRAVELLERS have set up home on commercial land in Greenock’s Spango Valley — and moves are under way to have them removed from the private site.

It is believed the group moved on to the land off Inverkip Road on Wednesday night.

The Glasgow firm which manages the property has sought advice from the authorities to help get the illegal campers removed.

Workman LLP contacted all Ward 6 councillors in a bid to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

A picture taken by the company shows three caravans, three vans and a car on the land.

It is understood that children are living at the site.

Illegal traveller camps have caused problems in the district over recent years, with hefty bills to clean up after some encampments break up and move on.

Early this year, camps were established in Port Glasgow, causing an outcry among local residents.

Councillor Gerry Dorrian says he has informed council officials and advised the property agents that they may need a court order to remove the group.

Workman LLP, told the councillor that ‘the existing tenants IBM are not happy about the caravans being here’.

In the email to councillors, they said: “Please can you provide some guidance as to how best to approach the travellers, with a view to having them moved on as soon as possible as IBM are anxious they be removed.

“We understand that there are children of school age on site. Is the council able to address this issue and approach the group on the basis of environmental, social, childcare or other issues?” Sergeant Allan O’Hare, of Greenock police, today confirmed that officers have been out to visit the site.

He added: “We have notified the local council but it is on private land and we are liaising with IBM over taking action to have the travellers removed.

“We will work with them if they require assistance.” A council spokesman said: “The site has been visited and we will continue to monitor the situation, following agreed council policy.”
