SUPER strikers at Moorfoot Primary have clinched a place in the final of a top football tournament.

The team’s players showed they had the goal-den touch as they reached the regional heat of the national Soccer Sevens.

The Gourock squad are the only local pupils to get through to the next round after winning their final in a gripping penalty shoot-out.

Their coach Evan Phillips is as proud as punch.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted and proud of the boys, how they all gelled as a team and how well they played for each other They’re excellent, they’re good at competitive football and pass the ball well.

“I believe we’re the only Inverclyde team to get through to the regional finals.”

The school is no stranger to success on the football field  — Moorfoot has made the finals of the competition twice before.

Evan, who teaches primary 4/3, said: “We reached the finals before but getting to the regional finals is a great achievement for us.

“There is a good group of boys coming through the school.”

The crucial games were played at Ferguslie Sports Centre where two leagues of five teams battled it out.

And Moorfoot triumphed on spot kicks during a tense play off.

Evan said: “It was quite exciting. Usually two teams go through but this time it was only one and this made it even more competitive.”

The boys are now looking forward to being cheered on by their supporters at the next round, which will be played in January or February.
