LITTLE learners at St Ninian’s Primary are stepping into a world of storybooks as part of a major drive to improve literacy levels.

Every primary one pupil in Inverclyde is set to receive a pack to take home, with three books by top Scottish children’s authors inside.

The youngsters from St Ninian’s recently visited Gourock Library to receive their books — are now busy reading the stories as part of National Book Week.

St Ninian’s teacher Lesley Clark said: “It is a fantastic way to encourage children to read and visit libraries.

“It is so important that children get the chance to read with their parents as well and enjoy books.
“There are some great authors and storybooks out there.

“When we went to Gourock Library to get our packs many of the children joined the library as well.
“It is lovely to see them enjoying books. I would say Moonlight School was their overwhelming favourite.”

The Scottish Book Trust aims to promote reading for all ages.

As part of their national book week they have handed out packs which include three story books — Never Tickle a Tiger by Pamela Butchart and illustrated by Marc Boutavant, Mouse’s First Night at Moonlight School by Simon Puttock and Ali Pye and Wanted! Ralfy Rabbit, Book Burglar by Emily MacKenzie.

They have all been shortlisted for the Scottish Book Trust Awards.

After listening to library staff reading the tales the kids voted for their favourite. Book fan Chloe Wilkin, a primary one pupil said: “I really love Moonlight School.”

She was joined at the storytelling by her classmates including Younis Naeem and Daniel Rose and they will get the chance to have their say on which author wins the Scottish Book Trust storybook of the year.

As well as giving every primary one pupil a family pack which also includes colouring books and pens, there are a number of associated Book Week events taking place this week in libraries across Inverclyde.

These include a Creative Cafe family fun art and craft day at Central Library this Saturday from 10.30 to 1pm.

It includes workshops for adults and kids, storytelling and songs at special BookBug sessions, face painting and a chill-out café-zone.
