A GREENOCK dad is hoping people will spend more than a penny to bid for old coins for charity.

Franky O’Neill, who set up the Freebies Inverclyde Facebook page, was given the donations to auction by members of the website.

Included in the historic haul is a Queen Victoria Jubilee Coin dated 1897 to celebrate the Queen’s 50 years on the throne.

Others include two old pennies dating back to 1882, a sixpence, a thrupence and halfpenny from 1912.

Franky, 25, of Buchan Street, said: “Any money raised will go to Ardgowan Hospice. It’s the main charity in Inverclyde and supports a lot of people.”

The former refuse collector set up the page three years ago with a handful of members and has seen it grow to a staggering 10,800 supporters.

Franky, who has a five-year-old daughter Lauren and son Franky who is four, said: “I was bored one night and decided to set up a page to help others. It a way to help others who are less fortunate.

"It’s a local community page where you see people doing good deeds and people want to be part of it and help others in their spare time.”

The page act as a platform for people who are struggling to access furniture, toys and white goods for free from others who no longer want the items.

Franky knows how tough things are for people at the moment as he is looking for work after losing his temporary position due to a motorbike injury.

If anyone wants to make a bid for the coins they should visit Freebies Inverclyde on Facebook.
