INVESTIGATIONS are going on into who is responsible for water pouring on to a pavement and road at a busy Greenock junction near Inverclyde Academy.

Councillor Ciano Rebecchi says that during heavy rain ‘a fountain’ comes out of land next to the A78 traffic lights at the junction with Auchmead Road.

The land lies close to a ScottishPower substation, but the energy giants say that they lease the ground from Inverclyde Council.

Councillor Rebecchi asked ScottishPower to visit the site with him after concerns had been raised by constituents about the slippy pavement.

He said: “The pavement can be dangerous because of ice, and I’m also worried that ice on the road there could cause a crash at this very busy junction.

“ScottishPower have earlier cut back bushes which were hanging over on to the pavement here, so I thought they would possibly be responsible for the water.

“It seems to be coming from a bit of a distance back from the road, and could be a problem with a field drain.”

A spokeswoman for ScottishPower said they lease the land from the council, and were were looking into legal documents to try to determine what should be done.

She said: “We are speaking with Inverclyde Council to determine who has the responsibility for the problem.”

Councillor Rebecchi added: “The ScottishPower representative was shocked when he saw the ice on the pavement and road, and said they would look into what can be done about it.

“I hope this can be resolved as soon as possible.”
