COUNCILLORS have today given the go-ahead for a controversial residential development in Port Glasgow.
They backed an application by Muir Homes for 27 new flats at the site of the old Broadstone House after the matter went to a vote.
Board members were in favour by 6-2.
Officials had recommended the bid for approval but nearby residents were up in arms at the proposal - with around 40 objections received - because it involves partial demolition of the historic, listed building.
Council officials had said they favoured the application because the building has largely become a ruin since being badly damaged by a fire 12 years ago and it was deemed beyond economic repair.
Councillors had considered the matter at a meeting late last year and decided to hold off until they made a site visit.
It took place recently and now the developers will be able to proceed.
