TWO talented best pals are the talk of the town after triumphing in a poetry competition at the Inverclyde Music Festival.

Five-year-old friends Adam Thompson and Leon Canney, who attend Aileymill Primary, spurred each other on when they stood up on stage by themselves and recited a poem.

The pair proved they have the gift of the gab, as Adam won the competition while Leon was a close second.

Proudly clutching their certificates, the primary one classmates told the Tele that it was a double celebration.

Leon said: “Me and Adam are best friends.

“We play Lego and we go outside and play when it’s lunchtime.

“At the festival we did a poem called The Tadpole.

“I’m very happy that I got second place and Adam won. My mum is proud of me.”

Wee Adam was also beaming with delight.

He said: “When I went on the stage it was a little bit high up and it was really warm but I enjoyed it.

“My mum said that she was proud of me.”

Some of their classmates also triumphed at the competition — including Freya Crumlish, Skye McCabe, Sophie Dooley and Amber Robertson, above, who all either got first or second place in their poetry class.

Mrs Janice Johnston, one of the P1 teachers, says the festival is ideal for developing confidence and self esteem.

She said: “They have all worked really hard and their parents have been very supportive in helping them prepare for the festival.

“It’s a great confidence booster and it’s a very good thing for them to do even if they don’t win.”
