FLY-TIPPERS have sparked fury after dumping toxic asbestos material at a renowned Inverclyde beauty spot.
A search is underway for the people who illegally dumped a mountain of rubbish near the start of the Greenock Cut at the top of Overton Road.
The mess includes an asbestos water tank – prompting safety fears.
It’s believed the culprits also set some of the debris alight, leaving parts of the countryside badly scorched.
Inverclyde Council were notified of the situation and officials have slammed those responsible for it.
A spokesman at the Municipal Buildings said: “Fly-tipping is anti-social, selfish and illegal and we will actively pursue those responsible.
“The disposal of dangerous materials such as asbestos is strictly regulated by law and this blatant and irresponsible incident is to be utterly condemned.”
It’s understood officials will now push to have greater restrictions put on road access to the beauty spot.
The mess sparked outrage on social media, with locals branding it ‘shocking’ and ‘disgusting’.
Greenock man Eddie Cole said: “Inverclyde’s scum fly-tippers are at it again in the Overton hills.
“Someone must know which house this is from.”
Local Eric Houston added: “Look at the countryside we have got and they do this.”
Others have called for authorities to introduce more severe punishments to deter fly-tippers.
Jeff Regan said: “The problem is they just seem to get a slapped wrist if they get caught.
“We need to hammer these idiots.”
