POLICE have launched an investigation after a laser pen was pointed at a pilot flying an air ambulance over Greenock.

The shocking incident happened last Friday.

It’s believed the laser may have been shone from the Cornhaddock Street area.

While it is not a crime to own a laser pen police are reminding people that it is a very serious offence to shine a light at an aircraft in flight.

Beams can dazzle, distract or impair pilots and cause them to feel unwell.

Meanwhile a maritime pilot on board a boat near George Road in Gourock also reported being targeted by a laser on Sunday.

Sergeant Laura Stewart, of Greenock police, said: “There were a couple of incidents in quick succession over the course of the weekend.

“One involved the air ambulance over the south of Greenock, which is particularly concerning.

“The pilot reported he was being targeted.

“It’s a crime and people have been charged with that offence in the past.”

Police do not know if the same person was involved in both incidents but local officers are appealing for information.

Anyone with information can report it by calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
