A man was left in critical condition following an attempted murder in Renfrew last night. 

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Houston Street after a man was seriously assaulted on Wednesday at 7.20pm.

The 37-year-old man from South Ayrshire was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley with a puncture wound to his chest and a number of injuries to his upper body and hands.

Police and ambulance were in attendance and the man required urgent medical attention.

When he was taken to the hospital he was in a life threatening condition however after receiving medical treatment he is now in a stable condition.

There is currently no description of the suspect 

A police spokesman said: "This was not a random attack and we understand that the victim was in previous association with the attacker and the people he was in company with.

"As the victim was in a life threatening situation this is being treated as assault and attempted murder."

Police are currently investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area.
