EFFORTS are being made to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Greenock Blitz.

Councillor Chris McEleny will propose a motion at tomorrow’s full council meeting to hold an event on Saturday May 7 marking 75 years since the town was bombed during the Second World War.

The SNP group leader is calling for a ceremony of remembrance to be held in Clyde Square.

In his motion, Mr McEleny says: “Many residents of Inverclyde still with us today lived through the horrific events and there are many who lost loved ones on those nights 75 years ago.

“Inverclyde Council will never forget the citizens of our area who lost their lives on those evenings.”

Hundreds were killed and thousands were injured during the air raids on May 6 and 7, 1941.

Councillors will vote on Cllr McEleny’s motion at tomorrow’s meeting, which starts at 4pm in the council chambers.
