INVERCLYDE Council’s chief executive John Mundell is to retire later this year after 10 years at the helm.

He was brought in to help re-organise the council after the publication of a damning report by a Scottish overnment financial watchdog.

The Accounts Commission report for Audit Scotland branded Inverclyde Council ‘one of the worst in Scotland’ back in 2006.

After his appointment, Mr Mundell introduced a new management structure at the Municipal Buildings and he has been credited as a key figure in the turnaround at the local authority.

He broke the news of his retiral yesterday, saying: “I feel genuinely privileged to have been afforded the opportunity at a time when the council was experiencing difficulties in 2006.

“I have had great satisfaction in taking on the many challenges presented to me throughout my career, and I hope I have helped to introduce many improvements for the benefit of the people of Inverclyde and local government in Scotland.

“I have learned a great deal, made many friends, and have many memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

Mr Mundell described Inverclyde as ‘a special place’, and added: “I am thankful for the opportunities the council has given me during my tenure.”

Mr Mundell will step down on September 19, and a search will be launched for his replacement.
