A BRAVE five-year-old boy battling leukaemia moved Morton fans to ‘Glow Gold’ and show their support for his family’s Tele-backed campaign.

Gourock’s Nathan Mowat, who is undergoing gruelling treatment for the blood cancer, proudly ran on to the pitch at Cappielow with the Morton players as a mascot for the last home game of the season on Saturday against Hibs.

His family looked on as fans then held aloft gold cards before kick off as a gesture of support for all childhood cancer sufferers. They say they were left overwhelmed by the club’s backing.

Nathan’s mum, Gillian, who started the awareness-raising campaign in Inverclyde, said: “It was a very emotional day for us and I was so proud of Nathan. He just soaked it all up and loved every minute of it.

“He had the most fantastic day and I can’t thank Morton enough for their support and the way we were treated.

“The players were so kind to Nathan. The goalkeeper Derek Gaston gave

"Nathan his gloves and he has not let them out of his sight since. He wanted to sleep in his Morton top.”

Morton are the latest local organisation to sign up to the Glow Gold campaign, showing support for children with cancer.

The Tele has teamed up with Gillian and her family to promote the important message of support all across the area.

We want people to show a golden touch and light up homes, workplaces, nurseries, shops, schools and community centres all over the area in a show of solidarity.

Gillian and her husband Paul were devastated when Nathan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

His body was overproducing cancerous, immature white blood cells.

Since then he has undergone hours of treatment with chemotherapy to blast the cancerous cells and he faces another two years of maintenance treatment.

As a result of this he has no way of fighting infections and has to be rushed to hospital if he has any spike in temperature.

His mum added: “Even a cold could have devastating consequences for Nathan so we have to monitor everything.”

Since the colourful campaign was launched Gillian has been overwhelmed by the support received around the community.

She said: “People have been offering to do so much for us. It is amazing.”

Morton officials and players were moved by Nathan’s story and pleased to play their part in the charity effort.

The club’s commercial manager, Susan Burns, said: “We are very proud to support this campaign and delighted that Nathan had such a great day.”
