YOUNGSTERS at Inverclyde Academy are gearing up for their adaptation of smash hit teen show High School Musical.

Around 35 pupils from first to sixth year are taking part in the spectacular, which swings into action next month.

The dedicated cast, along with their backstage crew have been rehearsing since October — and all their hard work is paying off.

Drama teacher Emma McCallum said: “The pupils asked to do it and it’s something we haven’t done before.

“They’re loving it and really enjoying the preparation.

“They have been working really hard and I’m very impressed with their efforts.”

Pupils have been rehearsing twice a week after school on Wednesday and Thursdays.

Ms McCallum added: “They have been giving their all to make the show the best it can be, despite the seniors in the cast being on study leave and studying for extremely important exams.

“There are Saturday rehearsals coming up and they are still committing to that.”

The musical is about the relationships between two high school students, the captain of the basketball team and a shy transfer student, who excels in maths and science.

Pupils from the school basketball team are also joining the cast for their first show as ‘The Jocks.’

Emma said: “It’s a feel-good musical and they’ve all thrown themselves into it. Pupils also did bag-packing in Morrisons to put into the show. They’ve given 100 per cent.”

The show runs from Tuesday June 14 to Thursday 16 June, with shows at 7pm.

Primary seven pupils from five local primaries have been invited to the dress rehearsal on Monday June 13.

Tickets cost £6 and group ticket for four cost £20.
