A CRUEL conman stole a pensioner's handbag after posing as a workman to get into her Port Glasgow home.

The callous culprit called at the 77-year-old's home in Tiree Avenue at about 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

After posing as a workman, he followed the pensioner into her property before distracting her and making off with her handbag which contained a three figure sum of money.

Detective Constable Laura Agnew, of Greenock CID, is urging people to come forward with information.

She said: "A 77-year-old woman from Tiree Avenue in Port Glasgow had her handbag stolen at about 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

"A male came to her house offering to do repair work and followed her into the house.

"He then distracted her and stole her handbag which contained cash.

"The male is described as being about 6ft 3in with a stocky build and was in his mid to late 40s with fair hair.

"He was wearing a grey coloured jumper and dark trousers.

"We believe the male made off in a pick-up style vehicle.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact the Police on 101."
