GREENOCK Ocean Terminal’s wishing well was given a ringing endorsement by a top Rotarian.
Peter Davey, president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, visited the well during a trip to meet Greenock Rotary Club members.
And he was suitably impressed with the display, which was created at the suggestion of Sylvia Kelly, second from right, of Greenock Rotary.
She said: “We thought it would be interesting for Peter to see the well during his visit.”
Peter, fourth from left, added: “This is a great idea to welcome visitors to Inverclyde.”
The well was part of a £250,000 development incorporating a dry stone wall and the original 19th century Greenock fog warning bell.
The bell has been given a new lease of life as a wishing bell, to raise money for charities supported by Rotary. A sign posted next to the bell encourages cruise ship passengers to throw in coins.
It reads: “Throw a penny, hit the bell, make a wish, only time will tell.”
The bell was originally part of the Princes Pier Railway terminus, now the site of the Ocean Terminal.
All of the coins are collected by terminal staff and passed on to Rotary.
Craig Collins, manager of Clydeport, far left, recently presented Rotary President Bill Knox, third from right, with a cheque for £500 from the well.
