A GREENOCK cafe will celebrate its first anniversary by serving up cones for a quid – to help two good causes.

Orangefield Cafe owners Colin and Nicola McEachnie came up with the sweet gesture to mark a happy milestone.

On Saturday they will have a host of special offers and proceeds will be split between Greenock-based Reach for Autism and Dementia Scotland.

Small cones, which are normally £1.80, will cost just a quid with a large one priced £1.50 instead of £1.80.

They will also be selling a cup of tea and slice of birthday cake for £1.

Nicola told the Tele: “Any money raised is going to the two charities.

“If we can put something back into the community that would be great. We’re hoping people come along and take advantage of it – and help two worthy causes at the same time.”

The couple, who have a young son named Corey, took over the business from Dino Pieri following his retirement in December 2013.

They also took on his famous, award-winning ice cream and continue to make it on site at the Holmscroft Street cafe every day using Dino’s closely-guarded recipe.

They plan to continue building the cafe, which had been shut for 18 months before they stepped in.

Nicola, from Greenock, said: “It’s been hard work but it’s been worth it and hopefully we can continue to go from strength to strength.

“Marco in the chippy next door has been a great help and given us loads of advice.

“The customers have been great and really supported us.

“It’s great to see so many old customers coming back.”
