A TOUCH of the upcoming Rio Olympics came to Port Glasgow as primary school pupils held their own games.
There was a carnival atmosphere at St Michael’s as pupils, staff and parents joined together for a sports day with a twist.
Ahead of this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the children competed in events inspired by the global sporting event and waved flags of nations that will be competing in August. Just like the iconic Brazilian city, the sun was shining as pupils throughout the school enjoyed the occasion.
Teacher Maria O’Donoghue said: “This event gave pupils from P1-7 the opportunity to showcase the skills which they have developed this session through the PE component of the health and wellbeing programme.
“P7 sports captains led their teams, with support from P6. Children were delighted to share their learning with parents and carers whilst having fun with teammates.
“The games were opened by the school’s oldest and youngest pupils - Kiera Gallacher and Eryn Lee - who carried the Olympic torch.
“Flag bearers for each competing country and competitors then marched onto the field.”
The Festival of Sport event was held in conjunction with Inverclyde Active Schools and with support from St Stephen’s High.
