INSPIRED youngsters are making a right racquet – as Murraymania gives tennis clubs in Inverclyde a boost.

Summer camps have been busy at Fort Matilda and Ardgowan, with the ‘Murray effect’ a key factor.

Calum Roberts, Inverclyde’s tennis development officer, says he received a flood of calls last Sunday from youngsters wanting to sign up after watching Andy win his second Wimbledon men’s title.

He said: “When Andy Murray won, I got calls from eight or nine people within a hour who wanted to book for the camp, which proves the point that it does really make a difference.

“People who used to play have also come back.

“I think he’s the best sportsperson in the UK just now and he gets people interested and he relates to the public.”

The local tennis sessions run in the morning for youngsters and in the afternoon for older players.

Calum said: “We’ve had an average of 30 every day in the morning and 20 in the afternoons.”

Andy is a big hit with the future generation of players.

Adam Kershaw, 14, of Canmore Crescent, said: “I’ve been playing tennis for five years and Andy Murray was my inspiration.

“There’s not been a lot of good British players in the past, he’s just come out of nowhere and he is an inspiration to young players all over Britain.”

Chris Jewell of Tennis Inverclyde said: "Every year we have a great Wimbledon effect, bringing both youngsters and adults onto courts, encouraged by the championships.

"Andy winning Wimbledon again this year will have heightened that desire and the tennis camps are a great way for youngsters to try out their skills and get some coaching in a fun-filled environment.”
