POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was stabbed in Greenock yesterday morning.

The 34-year-old from Greenock was assaulted at 10.30 in Barwhirley Road near the junction with Strone Crescent.

DI David Wagstaff said the man reported he was driving his white Vauxhall Insignia when he stopped to get something out of his boot.

He was then approached by two men, one of whom stabbed him in the hip.

DI Wagstaff said: "The victim then drove elsewhere in Greenock to get a friend to take him to Inverclyde Royal Hospital, where he had stitches inserted in the wound."

No description of the attackers is available.

DI Wagstaff added: "The area was busy at the time because it was a nice day, so we would like to hear from anyone who saw anything happening."

Police have made house to house inquiries and are reviewing CCTV footage of the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
