A SEVEN-hour 'siege' at St John's Church in Gourock that included police negotiators and a gang of Pokemon hunters has ended.

The incident concluded peacefully when the last of the two men who scaled the structure climbed down unaided from near the top of the bell tower at around 12.30am on Friday.

It came after a seven-hour stand-off with police on Thursday night.

The night of drama took a comedic turn when a group of people arrived at the scene around 9.30pm after a cartoon Pokemon character was sighted in the area.

Police spent over seven hours at the developing incident after two men scaled the bell tower of the Gourock church shortly before 6pm.

The pair initially refused to come down, but one eventually climbed to the ground around an hour later after being spoken to by officers.

But the other man remained up the tower throughout the night, with police negotiators from Glasgow brought in to try and talk him safely to the ground.

Bath Street was closed off by officers for over four hours while fire services also attended.

The two men are believed to have been taken away and held by police.

One onlooker said: "It looked to all end peacefully."

Scaffolding is currently on the church steeple while work is done to install a phone mast.
