GREENOCK was the starting point for a wartime story that will be featured on national TV.

A fortune in gold was sent from here to Canada for safekeeping because of the threat of a German invasion during World War Two.

And the story will be told on BBC1’s The One Show.

Presenter John Sergeant joined sailors from the Faslane Patrol Boat Squadron’s HMS Raider on the Gareloch, pictured,  to film the tale of Operation Fish for an upcoming programme.

It will include interviews with academic Dr Peter Catterall and Sally Cronin, the daughter of Eric Coleman, who was involved in the top secret mission.

Lieutenant Chris Fox of HMS Raider, said: “Hearing about Operation Fish reminds us of the long and enduring connection that the Royal Navy has with the Clyde.

“It’s a connection that is still very apparent today, and which HMS Raider is proud to be a part of.”

The date of the broadcast is not known yet, but is expected to be over the next few weeks.
