A PENSIONER was taken to hospital with a head injury after a road accident in Greenock’s west end.

The 88-year-old woman was a passenger in one of two taxis involved in a collision on Brisbane Street at the junction with Forsyth Street just after 9am yesterday.

Another person was also taken to hospital and both were later released after treatment. The crash was one of three similar incidents to take place in the west end yesterday.

The second occurred around 2pm when two vehicles collided at the junction of Campbell Street and Ardgowan Street.

The third happened around 7pm at the same location as the first crash.

Of the second incident, police traffic Sergeant Mark Millar said: “There was a two-car incident involving a Suzuki Vitara and X-type Jaguar and a female passenger is being treated for minor injuries.

“It was the second incident in the west end within hours – the first accident involved two taxis and an 88-year-old woman suffered a head injury.
“It is serious, but not life threatening.”

Several Tele readers contacted our newsroom to express concern in the wake of the crashes, saying they believed a lack of markings had contributed because roads in the area are still to be repainted after the council carried out resurfacing work.

One resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “It is two weeks since some of the roads were resurfaced. When will the council repaint these markings?”

Sergeant Millar said: “There has to be period of time after the road is resurfaced before the markings are re-instated.

“It’s on a council schedule of work. I would urge drivers to be extra vigilant.”

A council spokesman said: "The road marking contractor is due in this area to remark the give way lines on Tuesday weather permitting.
"'No Road Markings' warning signs have been in place at each of the affected road junctions since the works were carried out."
