HUNDREDS of Scouts are promising a top class performance in the hugely-popular Greenock Gang Show.

The biennial stage extravaganza – which has been on the go for more than 70 years – returns in November to the Beacon featuring Scouts, Cubs and Beavers from across the Greenock & District network.

Musician Kenny Wilson of The Wherries is producing the show, with the help of an army of enthusiastic young people and adult volunteers.

As well as featuring the usual mix of music and comedy, this year’s spectacular will also celebrate the centenary of the Cub Scouts and 30 years of the Beavers.

Close to 250 people are involved in the Greenock Gang Show, with a cast of about 150 and around 100 adults helping to organise the event.

The five-night run starts on November 15 and includes a Saturday matinee.

Peter Bennett, district commissioner, said: “It pulls together people - the majority of which have never been in a theatre let alone perform on stage - to make a great show.

“Kenny brings all that together and really does a great job.

“It’s been on the go for over 70 years and it’s a great show – probably one of the best amateur performances at the Beacon.”

The Greenock Gang Show is one of the biggest in Scotland and one of just half a dozen left in the country.

The Inverclyde version continues to thrive thanks to the burgeoning Greenock & District Scouts network, which now boasts around 1,500 members and growing across 17 groups.

The show also helps raise much needed funds for Greenock & District to help pay for activities and maintenance of facilities.

Mr Bennett said: “This is probably the single biggest thing we do every two years and it raises money for the local district.

“It’s difficult to get funding for ongoing maintenance and activities.

“There will be a lot of music in the show, and, with Kenny Wilson, a lot of comedy.

“A key feature this year is the centenary of the Cub Scouts and 30 years of the Beavers.”
