THOUSANDS of Morton fans are on the march to Hampden today as their club gets set for one of its biggest games in recent times.

Ton will take on Aberdeen in the semi-final of the Betfred Cup this afternoon and the travelling support will be making its way to Glasgow this morning in time for the 12.15pm kick-off.

It’s the first time the Cappielow club have made it to the last four of a national cup competition in 35 years.

Fans from the Morton Supporters’ Club in Greenock, pictured, will be joined by a convoy of other buses from the town and more from Gourock and Port Glasgow as they carry fans up the M8 to Glasgow’s south side, with others heading up by car and rail.

ScotRail say they have added extra carriages to trains between Gourock and Glasgow Central to help fans from Inverclyde.

The game has sparked plenty of interest further afield too, with Ton fans travelling ‘home’ from all parts of the UK to see it.

One local Morton-mad family even changed their holiday plans to make it back in time.

Ali Witherow and his 13-year-old son Martin, inset, cut short a break near Salou and left mum Anne and the couple’s daughter Jennifer, 14, behind in Spain.

Ali and Martin made a mad dash via train, plane and road to return to Scotland after deciding they just couldn’t miss the match.

Aberdeen have shifted over 10,000 tickets for the game while Ton were hoping to be heading towards about half that number during the week.

Morton made it through to this stage of the competition by winning their qualification group and then beating Hamilton and Dundee United in the knock-out stages.

The other semi-final will be played tomorrow, between Celtic and Rangers.

Although today’s match kicks-off at 12.15pm the club has warned people to arrive in plenty of time.

Morton said: “All fans should note that enhanced search arrangements will be in place at this fixture and this additional safety measure has the potential to delay entry into the ground, so fans are strongly encouraged to get to the stadium as early as possible. Turnstiles will be open from 10.45am.”
