UNDERPRIVILEGED children across Inverclyde are set for a brighter Christmas thanks to a big-hearted Greenock couple.

Mike and Joni Sturrock have launched an appeal looking for new toys which they will distribute to families in crisis over the festive period.

Last year, the couple from Larkfield Road were overwhelmed by the response to their ‘Every kid deserves a toy’ Facebook appeal.

Thanks to the community’s generosity, they distributed more than 700 gifts to needy families in the area.

They now hope to replicate that success and ensure that every local child has a present to open on Christmas morning.

Mike told the Tele: “Our aim is to reach out into our community and provide a service for families with kids who may be disadvantaged or in need/or crisis.

“Last year was a huge success – I was delivering toys until about 11.30pm on Christmas Eve. If it wasn’t for the people of Inverclyde, we couldn’t do it.”

Mike said that one woman they helped out last Christmas is so grateful that she wants to give something back this year, adding: “Last year there was one lady in crisis who had two kids. We were able to support her and she’s now in a better position so has decided to donate toys herself.

Mike says he’s delighted that his workplace, The Haven in Kilmacolm, is also supporting the cause.

He said: “The guys are going to help by writing letters to businesses, churches and other groups to encourage them to get involved. It’s all about making sure that no child goes without this year.”

Mike and Joni, who themselves have three children, have set up collection points in Greenock, including at Ibo’s Turkish Barbour shop in Grey Place, and Juliana Hairdressers in Nelson Street. Another toy collection point is at Cherry Blossom in Lochwinnoch Road, Kilmacolm.

Mike said: “We’re also keen to thank Jacqui from Cash Generator in Greenock for her donation as well as everyone who supported us last year, including the RBS Mortgage Centre, Mecca Bingo and The Bank of Scotland in Greenock.”

The group works closely with local churches, community groups and the social work department but anyone can get in contact with them.

They also have a toy pick-up service too. For more information or to contact the couple, visit the ‘every kid deserves a toy’ Facebook page or phone 07963 596528.
