HUNDREDS of children and families across Inverclyde will have a happier Christmas this year thanks to the generosity of Tele readers.

The annual Greenock Salvation Army Toy Appeal — backed by the Telegraph — has launched ahead of the start of the festive season and kind people across the district have already donated a mountain of goodies for under-privileged youngsters.

Volunteers are working with Inverclyde Council social work staff to support children and families who need some help to ensure they have a cracking Christmas.

Last year the popular appeal — which has been on the go for almost 30 years — helped put smiles on the faces of 431 boys and girls from a total of 240 families.

It is for newborns right up to children aged 12.

Even before the official launch of the appeal, the Tele office was already packed with hundreds of new toys handed in by kind readers and residents throughout the area.

Organiser Maureen Pentland, from the Salvation Army, said: “This is a good supply on top of the stuff that we’ve had donated.

“Last year everyone was delighted with what they received.

“It’s difficult to keep it going every year but thanks to the generosity of folk — especially Tele readers — it is always such a great succes.

“The appeal makes a difference to so many children and families in Inverclyde and ensures they have a better Christmas.”

The toys will be distributed on December 19, 20 and 21 once the collection period ends.

Organisers are also looking for donations of pyjamas and underwear this year and toys for older children.

Items can be handed into the Tele office at 2 Crawfurd Street, Greenock, and the Salvation Army citadel on Regent Street, via the Roxburgh Street entrance, until Thursday December 15.
