RUNNERS from around the west of Scotland took part in a new Greenock race to celebrate the start of 2017.

Seven clubs were represented in the inaugural Lyle Mile Challenge, organised by Greenock Glenpark Harriers on January 1.

Fifty-two athletes completed the race, 32 of them from Glenpark, starting at the junction of Lyle Road and Newark Street at Fort Matilda and climbing the energy-sapping 401 feet to the beacon on Lyle Hill.

The other clubs represented were Inverclyde Athtletic Club, Bellahouston Road Runners, Victoria Park, Clydesdale Harriers, Kilbarchan AAC and the Scottish Prison Service AAC.

John Bell of Inverclyde won in 6.26, ahead of current Glenpark champion Steven Campbell (6.54) and his club mate Paul Monaghan (6.56). Claire Thompson of Victoria Park was the first female in 8.49, followed by Glenpark’s Marion Monk (9.22) and Marianne McKay (9.31).

A Glenpark spokesperson said: “We were happy with the turnout – it was an excellent achievement, and a great team effort from everyone involved.”
