FUNDRAISING football fans in Port Glasgow hit the back of the net with a £5,000 donation to charity – taking their total close to an impressive £30,000.

Members of the Brown Street Rangers Supporters’ Club handed over a bumper cheque to representatives from Erskine care home, which looks after war veterans.

The presentation was made to coincide with the charity’s centenary appeal.

It means the club has collected almost £30,000 in the last 12 years.
Members of the club, which is based at Lodge Doric Kilwinning No 68 on Brown Street, fundraise throughout the year and before every Rangers home match at Ibrox. Neil Mitchell, treasurer of Brown Street RSC, said:

“We presented a cheque for £5,000 to Erskine for their centenary appeal.

“This was from a sponsored walk and raffles at each home game.

“We have now raised almost £29,500 for charities since 2004.”

Members are asked to nominate a charity – and last year chose Erskine, which has been caring for veterans since 1916.

The club’s various money-spinning events over the years have helped raise large sums for the likes of Ardgowan Hospice and the former Inverclyde Royal Hospital children’s diabetic unit.

A sponsored walk takes place every year from the 68 Club to Battery Park, with people of all ages taking part.

Members tend to choose charities which have special meaning to them or that have supported friends and family.

They would like to thank everyone who has supported their efforts, and the charities, by making generous contributions.
