A PLAN to breathe new life into an eyesore building in Larkfield has taken a step forward — with a ‘major retailer’ today linked with the site.

Council bosses have confirmed they are in talks with a buyer for the Ravenscraig Shopping Centre in Cumberland Walk.

The majority of shops in the complex are empty except for a Chinese takeaway, bookmaker’s and a pharmacy and the flats above them are derelict.

Campaigners have been desperate to have the block flattened or redeveloped and now a deal is in the pipeline.

A spokesman for Inverclyde Council said: “The site at Cumberland Walk has been marketed by our property services as a retail development opportunity.

“A preferred bidder has been identified and detailed negotiations are ongoing at the moment.”

The move has been welcomed by the Braeside Residents’ and Tenants ‘group.

They posted a statement on their Facebook page describing it as ‘great news’.

It added: “Cumberland Walk flats and retail units will be replaced with new retail units and mini store of a major retailer.

“There will be an opportunity to retain some of the development for the community.”

Fears have been raised over the years about the condition of the block and its safety and there were calls for its demolition following a fire in September.

Community campaigner John Houston, who is set to stand for election to the council in May as an independent candidate, said: “It’s welcome news and if it comes to fruition it will fantastic for the area.”

It is understood that council officials will attend the next meeting of Larkfield, Braeside, and Branchton Community Council to update members.
