NEW parents are in a spin after a baby-friendly fitness class was launched in Greenock.

The ‘Spinfit for two’ classes, which have started at the Waterfront and Greenock Sports Centre, allow mums, dads and guardians to work out and bring their little ones with them.

Victoria Starrett, 34, of Brougham Street, who works as a membership advisor for Inverclyde Leisure, brought her baby daughter Penny Fleming along to one of the classes.

She said: “I think it’s a great idea.

“I’ve been looking for something like this for ages.

“It can be really hard to fit in a workout when you’re a mum but this lets me do that.”

Alan Brown, who is one of the coaches, says the class gives new parents a chance to keep fit and make friends.

He said: “The idea is that the babies will be in their prams or car seats and they will face their parents who will be on the spin bikes.

“The music will be kept down really low.

“This gets people out in the morning and keeps them fit but it’s also a social thing too.

“The first class went really well and we got positive feedback so hopefully word will get round.”

Aileen Cameron, group fitness co-ordinator, hopes to encourage as many new parents as possible to join in.

She said: “We just want to accommodate mums, dads and guardians that don’t have childcare to come along and exercise.

“The first class was brilliant and a few mums afterwards sat on the seats outside and fed their babies.”

The class is at Greenock Sports Centre at 11am on Wednesday mornings and at the Waterfront Leisure Centre on Friday mornings at 9.45am.
