STUDENTS and lecturers in Inverclyde are celebrating the transformation of an old science laboratory into one fit for the 21st century.

West College Scotland have invested £160,000 in the newly refurbished facility at their Greenock campus.

Bosses at the college say it will make a major difference to students and staff alike.

The six-figure overhaul saw it transformed from what was a tired, outdated space with no information technology access, to an up-to-date science learning lab with an adjoining IT room.

Curriculum leader for science at Greenock, Sandra Spence, says everyone is delighted with the  new equipment.

She said: “We’d like to acknowledge the creative input of John Regan and the estates team in helping design such an effective learning environment.

“Staff and learners love working together in this modern, bright laboratory, and it has significantly enhanced the student experience in the short time we’ve been using it.”

Sharon Gardiner, the head of science, social sciences and sport, added:

She said: “This new open learning space is extremely beneficial for both staff and students, allowing lecturers to use creative teaching techniques while enabling the students to learn in different ways.”

College principal, Audrey Cumberford and science student John Conning had the joint role of declaring the lab ‘open’ for teaching.

John, 36, said: “It was great to have been asked to attend the opening, and I was really chuffed to have been asked to cut the ribbon.

“It’s a lovely lab and a great environment to learn in.”
