GREENOCK is to receive the lion’s share of a £2.5 million town and village centre improvement fund.

Last month councillors agreed to use cash from Inverclyde Council reserves to help regenerate town centres over the next two years.

A report to the environment and regeneration has confirmed that Greenock will benefit to the tune of £1.9m.

Port Glasgow and Gourock will each receive £500,000, with the remaining £100,000 to be split equally between Inverclyde’s villages.

It has not yet been decided what the money will be spent on but it is aimed at improving the look and ‘economic activity’ of town centres.

Greenock councillor Jim Clocherty is pleased that his constituency looks set to benefit from the funding boost.

He hopes it will make a big difference to the town centre once invested.

Cllr Clocherty said: “I’ve been campaigning for Greenock to get a sizeable share.

“I’m delighted that it looks like the town will receive a substantial amount to ensure it’s an attractive place to shop and live.”

Respective town centre regeneration forums for towns and villages will be consulted on how the money should be spent.

Ideas and proposals will then be presented to councillors for final approval.
